The backstory of Assassin's Creed III: Liberation is that the video game itself is a product released in the Assassin's Creed universe by the Abstergo Corporation to hide the existence of the Templars and make the Assassins out to be psychotic murderers the series of events witnessed by the player of the game paint Aveline as an angry murderer who arbitrarily decides that people should die, often for trivial or poorly-thought-out reasons. Unlike Connor, whose experiences are relived by his descendent Desmond Miles, no one is experiencing Aveline's story through an Animus in the present day. She is the first female assassin protagonist in the series, and her adventures take place in the same colonial era as those of Connor Kenway, the protagonist of Assassin's Creed III. Aveline de Grandpré is the protagonist of the Vita title Assassin's Creed III: Liberation.
